Toyota Continues To Take U.S. Market Share from GM and Ford During April 2008

As gasoline prices jumped during the month of April 2008, passing $3.50 per gallon at the pump nationally, U.S. automotive sales by both General Motors and Ford Motor Company posted double-digit declines compared to April 2007. Comparative year-to-year April sales figures were calculated according to monthly sales results posted by both companies on May 1st. Both GM and Ford cited declining truck and SUV sales that dragged down their overall totals. GM’s truck and SUV sales dropped 27 percent, contributing to a total 16 percent drop overall for total vehicle sales within the U.S. market.

Ford Motor Company SUV sales dropped 36 percent, contributing to an overall vehicle sales drop of 12 percent in April 2008 compared to April 2007. Sales of the Ford Focus™, a gas-efficient small car that is rated at 24 mpg in the city and 33 mpg on the highway, helped mitigate this decline as sales for this product line actually increased by 42% over April 2007.

By contrast, Toyota vehicle sales in the U.S. market rose 12 percent in April 2008 over April 2007, due to a 54 percent increase in sales of the Toyota Prius™ hybrid and a 46 percent increase in sales of the subcompact Yaris™. Toyota’s truck and SUV sales declined just 8 percent during the same comparative periods, showing that Toyota may be taking away sales from GM and Ford at this high-end segment of the market, as well.

To GM, the decline in truck and SUV sales resulted in a net loss of $3.25 billion during the first quarter of 2008. On Wednesday, April 29th, GM announced employee layoffs of 3,500 jobs in factories that manufacture these vehicles.

Since the Consumer Electronics Show in January 2008, GM Chairman and CEO Rick Wagoner has been trying to show that the company is now committed to a “green” agenda for its automotive product lines. During a speech to the Commonwealth Club in San Francisco the day after layoffs were announced, Wagoner stated that “The automotive industry can no longer rely almost exclusively on oil to supply the world’s automotive energy requirements”.

Wagoner was interrupted by protesters during his speech and acknowledged comments about his leadership fighting California’s ZEV mandate over the last fifteen years that would have pushed worldwide automotive manufacturers into alternative energy vehicle manufacturing before the price of crude oil started its recent surge.

However, he insisted that General Motors is now making big investments in green technology once again. There will be eight hybrid models available to consumers by the end of 2008. Wagoner did confirm that the Chevrolet Volt™, a new Plug-In Hybrid Electric Vehicle (PHEV) concept car, is still on track to be “consumer-ready” by late 2010 with delivery of vehicles in 2011. However, he cautioned that these cars will be more expensive than traditional gasoline-powered vehicles that GM has manufactured over the last century.

Battery technology still holds back vehicle development.  For any new vehicle technology, the power train is usually designed, tested and perfected well before installing it on a vehicle platform. However, in the case of the Chevrolet Volt™, power train engineering and the rest of the vehicle platform development are moving forward in parallel. There will be many challenges to integrating the crucial parts of the system by 2010.

Volt Nation Community Forms to Encourage Chevrolet Volt Production

General Motors has been attempting to answer the success of the Toyota Prius™ by leapfrogging its parallel hybrid gasoline/electric Synergy™ system with a Plug-In Hybrid Electric Vehicle (PHEV) design on a variable E-flex chassis that can host several types of hybrid configurations. This series hybrid design would allow the electric motor in the vehicle to drive its wheels at all times while a gasoline engine, biodiesel engine or fuel cell serves as a range extender that is activated when the battery pack power source for the electric motor need recharging, increasing backup engine efficiency. By plugging in the hybrid at night to recharge its batteries, a PHEV owner trades off of the cost of electric power for gasoline. At today’s gasoline prices, the comparative price rate to get the same amount of electrical energy back into the PHEV battery pack is only about 60 cents per equivalent gallon of gas required to recharge the battery pack instead of an electrical outlet. Using the onboard gasoline engine as a generator or range extender would require a gasoline cost of $3.50 or more at today’s prices.

The Chevrolet Volt™ has been showcased by GM at auto shows over the last year with widespread production dates and availability to consumers targeted for 2011. Toyota has also been working on its version of a 100 + mpg PHEV based on the Prius™ hybrid platform that they hope to ship to customers in sufficient quantities by 2010. Some Prius owners across the country are already converted their existing cars to PHEVs using designs developed by the California Cars Initiative (CalCars): http://www.calcars.org

Bob Lutz of GM is responsible for guiding the Chevrolet Volt™ concept and design into production and distribution. To help with this educational development and marketing effort, GM has tried to inspire an enthusiastic community of potential Volt™ customers and even set up a web site for the community to interact with the company. The community is called Volt Nation and their web site is at: http://www.gm-volt.com/

Bob Lutz has been reaching out to this community directly through this web site and at other showcase venues for the Chevy Volt™:

Th!nk city™ 4-seat Electric Car Available in U.S. During 2009

A Norwegian electric car is coming to the United States through Menlo Park, California with support from leading venture capital company Kleiner Perkins Caufield & Byers (KPCB). Ray Lane is a partner of this Venture Capital company and is also chairman of Th!nk North America.

Kleiner Perkins Caufield & Byers has recently raised $1.2 billion in funding specifically targeting solutions for global warming. Former U.S. Vice-President and Nobel Prize winner Al Gore has joined the company’s Board of Directors.

The Th!nk city™ is a four-seat electric car about the size of a Honda Fit™ or Mini Cooper. It will arrive in the United States in limited numbers in late 2008.  Utilities, such as Pacific Gas & Electric in California and "influential companies" such as Google will get the first ones for testing and evaluation purposes. A Swedish utility recently ordered 1,000 Th!nk vehicles according to Jan-Olaf Willums, CEO of Th!nk Global.

In 2009, the electric cars will go on sale to the general public in the United States. The company is still developing its strategy for its distribution business model into the U.S. market. Price of the Th!nk city™ electric car will be about $25,000. Th!nk has contingent plans to ramp up production upon demand and could be selling as many as 50,000 units per year worldwide within the next two to three years.

KPCB and RockPort Capital Partners formed a joint-venture with Th!nk Global to form Th!nk North America. The company said it has hired Vicki Northrup, an electric-auto industry veteran, as its operations manager who will head its Menlo Park office.

The vehicle has a top speed of 65 mph with a range of 110 miles on a single charge. The company describes the car as completely emissions free.  95 percent of its parts are recyclable. This new electric car meets all U.S. and European safety standards.

Lane said that Th!nk North America will help Th!nk Global develop future vehicles based on its U.S. marketing, distribution, and support experiences.

The Fifth Annual Summerlin Earth Faire was held on Saturday, April 19th from 10 AM to 4 PM at Summerlin Centre Community Park. The park is located on Town Center Drive between Sahara and Charleston roads. The event was held on the park’s soccer field surrounded by over 60 portable tents with educational displays from eco-friendly organizations. Over 7,500 people attended the event, despite a windy day. Mascot Summerlin Sam visited the booth and entertained the many children who enjoyed climbing on the electric vehicles in front of the LVEVA booth.

Bob McNamara, Susan McNamara, Michelle Robinson, Don Harmon, Richard Furniss, Kay Furniss, Lloyd Reece, Bill Kuehl, Amanda Calliban, Jon Hallquist and Stan Hanel helped represent the LVEVA to support this educational effort.

Summerlin_Electrans_P4190209-2

Bob McNamara provided his Electrans™ 3-wheel electric motorcycle that his company produces as part of the booth display.

Summerlin_Raptor_P4190210-3

Michelle Robinson and Don Harmon exhibited a 3-wheel “Raptor” electric bicycle that their company “Boomerbents” distributes. Stan Hanel exhibited a two-wheel, folding electric “Buzz” scooter, formerly manufactured by Huffy bicycle company. The pictures shown above were provided courtesy of LVEVA member Michelle Robinson.

On Wednesday, April 23rd, LVEVA Vice-President Lloyd Wayne Reece joined Gail Lucas at the campus of the University of Nevada Las Vegas to exhibit his Lectra Motors Centauri™ electric car next to Gail’s electric Volkswagen “Bug” conversion. Their exhibit was visited by about 700 grammar school children who rode buses with their teachers and chaperones to attend a field trip to the UNLV campus from 9 AM to noon. Resident university students and their professors were also present between class sessions at the campus event, located on South Maryland Parkway between Flamingo Road and Tropicana Boulevard.

The LVEVA hopes to continue to fulfill its educational mission, promoting the daily usage of electric vehicles while encouraging the conversion of gasoline cars to electric cars that will provide clean, efficient transportation to the Las Vegas Valley region.

Fun Cars @ Las Vegas Rents NEVs for Tourists on The Strip

LiFeBATT_Fun_Car_000_0011-4

Fun Cars @ Las Vegas is located at 3049 Las Vegas Blvd., Suite #11N at the Sports Center Complex and Gold Key shops on the Las Vegas “Strip”. The location is just north of the Wynn Hotel and Casino, across the street from the former Stardust Hotel and Casino that was recently imploded to make way for a new megaresort.

Fun Cars @ Las Vegas rents brightly colored Neighborhood Electric Vehicles (NEVs) that can navigate the Las Vegas Strip while providing a safe, quiet, pollution-free driving experience, governed at a cruising speed of 35 mph. Each Fun Car seats four people in an open cockpit. A Fun Car can be delivered and picked up from a visitor’s hotel location on Las Vegas Boulevard, even providing delivery and pickup service to the customers’ door. Rentals are by the hour and an introductory offer provides one free hour of rental when purchasing 4 hours for a daily jaunt. The company is family-owned and just opened its doors in October 2007.

The Fun Car NEV is very similar to a golf cart that uses a propulsion system consisting of an electric motor that is powered by a rechargeable lead-acid (PbA) battery pack where voltage and current to the electric motor are regulated by a motor speed controller that is controlled from a foot throttle. The lead acid battery pack also provides power to a DC-to-DC converter that is a separate auxiliary power source for headlights, turn signals, brake lights, dashboard instruments, and other peripheral devices. The company performs routine daily maintenance on its fleet of vehicles but has also received maintenance support and parts sourcing from Jon Hallquist at Grassroots EV: http://www.grassrootsev.com

At Jon’s suggestion, the owners of the company have been testing the use of Lithium Iron Phosphate (LiFePO4) batteries to extend the range and performance of their vehicles. The heavy lead-acid pack provides 48 Volts DC at 165 Amp-hours. Fun Cars @ Las Vegas is hoping to replace this pack with a lighter LiFePO4 pack rated at 48 Volt DC at 80 Amp-hours that will still achieve greater range and performance. They are currently evaluating battery cells and integrated modules from LiFeBATT USA in Las Vegas at: http://www.lifebatt.com

LiFeBATT_Fun_Car_000_0005-6

LiFeBATT engineer Benja Mitchell recently installed a test pack with the help of LVEVA volunteer Bill Kuehl, who has performed over 200 EV conversions on full-sized cars by using existing lead acid battery pack technology. Initial installation of the test battery pack during the month of March 2008 succeeded in powering a Fun Car on a maiden voyage from the Wynn Resort to the “Welcome to Las Vegas” sign at the southern end of The Strip. This first engineering attempt also revealed interconnect and interfacing problems that the team will be working on to resolve and improve for future installations.  It was definitely a learning experience for all.

Hi all,

I owe an update to the list on the upcoming Power of DC in Hagerstown, Maryland.

Planet Green from the Discovery Channel will be there over the weekend to film.

AUTOCROSS, May 31

We are making final arrangements for the SCCA to come out and handle the AutoCross part of the event Saturday May 31.

Hybrids are welcome to compete provided they are not higher then they are wide. We will have a separate class for hybrids and electrics.

The SCCA will set up the course, handle safety and insurance and time the event. We are just confirming to make sure the official "Safety Stewart" is going to be able to make it. But as it looks now they have the equipment set aside for us. They asked how many cars will run. I'm estimating about 20 but really not sure.

So if anyone is interested in racing AutoCross just let me know to help confirm numbers. The SCCA is interested in knowing the turnout so they can set up the insurance estimate.

Email or contact me at futurev@radix.net or 301-490-0657

There will be a registration fee. $5.00 for a temporary 5-day SCCA membership and a $25.00 registration fee to help offsett the cost of the insurance.

AutoCross will run rain or shine.

The general eligibility rule is licensed drivers and the vehicle cannot be higher then it is wide. Small pickups are borderline. Sparrows can run since we had a Sparrow there last year with no

problems.

So it's looking great for AutoCross.

DRAG RACE, Sunday June 1

The drag race is still on schedule. Just show up on June 1 at 10:00 am at Mason-Dixon Dragway. Cost is $25.00 at the gate. Bring your rainchecks from last year. The $500 Lawless Challenge is still on for the fastest 1/8 mile two-wheels, on-location, battery powered

motorcycle type bike. This has to be spelled out for some people :-)

Shawn is planning to bring his new monster dragster "Juiced Up" and Darin Gilbert will also be racing.

USFRA Alternative Fuel Vehicles Racing at Bonneville Salt Flats September 17-20, 2008

Brent and Kent Singleton are the founders of the Utah EV Coalition, a chapter of the Electric Auto Association at: http://www.eaaev.org/eaachapters.html#UTAH

The “father and son team” are also organizers of an Alternative Fuel Vehicle (AFV) racing program in conjunction with the Utah Salt Flats Racing Association (USFRA) at: http://www.saltflats.com

This year, the USFRA will hold its annual “World of Speed” racing event from September 17-20, 2008. All EV racers are invited to participate “on the salt” during these open competitions. Brent Singleton will be racing his Electric Jaws, Jr. dragster. Other EV racers from the National Electric Drag Racing Association have expressed interest in testing their vehicles at this international venue, as well: http://www.nedra.com

Brent and Kent have also invited alternative fuel vehicle racers from the battery-powered Electrathon America organization and from the solar-powered SunRayce organization. One goal that the Singletons have set for 2008 is to try to develop an oval track on the salt flats with related competitions that would bring back endurance racing events to Bonneville. These proposed events would test the relative efficiencies of all fuels. They are hoping to follow in the footsteps of the original racing pioneers who saw the potential of this natural lakebed to set both speed and distance records over its long flat surface. If anyone has unique ideas on how to test alternative fuels and relative efficiencies with more accurate benchmarks, please contact Brent or Kent.

The USFRA AFV organizers hope to establish relative standards for measuring both technology and environmental efficiencies. Besides speed and mechanical efficiencies, the AFV group also hopes to record comparative hydrocarbon emissions from different AFV technologies. Record setting performances would be sanctioned and recorded at the International Alternative Fuel Racing Association (IAFRA) at: http://www.iafra.com

For more information about attending the USFRA World of Speed or racing an Alternative Fuel Vehicle (AFV) during the competitions, contact Brent Singleton at: brent@saltflats.com

Brent can also be contacted through the event sponsor, the Utah Clean Cities Coalition.at: http://www.utahcleancities.org/contact.htm

“Spirit of DC” Plug-In Hybrid Electric Vehicle to Tour All 50 States

100_1664-7

Editor’s Note: Jerry Asher is the inter-chapter coordinator for the Electric Auto Association, the parent organization for the Las Vegas Electric Vehicle Association chapter as well as over 40 other chapters in the United States and Canada. In November 2007, Jerry launched an educational Southwest Tour of several EAA chapters throughout Texas, New Mexico, Arizona, Nevada and California by personally driving a converted Toyota Prius Plug-In Hybrid Electric Vehicle (PHEV) to meet with local chapter members in each state.  The Prius had been converted at a Makers Faire in Austin, Texas and was delivered by Jerry to an EAA member in San Francisco, California. The PHEV conversion was performed in conjunction with the California Cars Initiative organization, an affiliate organization of the EAA at: http://www.calcars.org

On Earth Day 2008, April 22nd, another Toyota Prius PHEV conversion was completed in Washington, DC with the cooperation of the Electric Vehicle Association of DC chapter (EVA/DC). It has been christened “The Spirit of DC” and Jerry is hoping to expand his PHEV tour to now include all the capitol cities of all 50 states and parts of Canada, leveraging the existing member chapters of the EAA: http://www.SpiritofDC.com

He is calling this effort PHEV All Around America or PHEV3A:

Aloha!

From:

J. "EVJerry" Asher, EVADC PHEV3A Co-Chair

Joe Lado, EVADC PHEV3A Co-Chair

Electric Vehicle Association of Greater Washington, DC

Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicle All Around America (PHEV3A) Program

Dear Plug-In Vehicle Enthusiast,

The Electric Vehicle Association of Greater Washington, DC (EVA/DC)

proudly announces that it is a sponsor of a Spirit of DC, a Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicle that will travel All Around America (PHEV3A). We invite all the Chapters of the Electric Auto Association (EAA) to join us in this endeavor to let the public know about plug-in vehicles and the power of electricity in automobile transportation. Our first objective is to visit some 50 EAA Chapters and demonstrate in a "show & tell" fashion the practicality of PHEVs.

Not only is EVA/DC taking the lead by sponsoring of PHEV3A financially,

but more importantly, EVA/DC is coordinating the program with skill and talent coming from all around America . For example, "The Spirit of DC" is being converted by Mike Harvey of Harvey Coachworks (http://www.harveyev.com/) out of Knoxville, Maryland. Robb Protheroe of Plug in Supply (http://www.pluginsupply.com/) in Petaluma, California, is providing the PHEV system components,

Caroline Coquillette of Luscious Garage(http://www.lusciousgarage.com/) in San Francisco made available special rear springs so that the Spirit of DC can ride steady. Dr Jack Martin, the President of the Triad EVA in North Carolina, is coming up to volunteer for the launch. There are more examples of others standing up and offering to help and there is plenty of need for help to. If you or members of your chapter want to help, feel free to offer donations of money, batteries, low resistant tires, a place to stay for the driver, food, media attention, electricity or what ever you think will help.

We want "The Spirit of DC" to take EVADC member, Jerry Asher, and other

EAA’rs, who'd like to do "Ride Alongs," from the steps of the US Capitol to all 50 State Capitals (even possibly getting water transport to Hawaii), as well as reaching some Provinces of Canada. The intention is to demonstrate the practicality of the PHEV to the general public. "The Spirit of DC" expects to tally over 10,201 miles in its first 101 days while attempting to get 101 miles per gallon by using plug-in electricity each day as much as possible. We believe that with the assistance of the EAA chapters that “The Spirit of DC” can achieve this EV challenge.

The Father of the Modern Plug-In Hybrid, University of California at Davis Professor Andy Frank, said: "A long electric range PHEV is first an EV," and we consider our PHEV "The Spirit of DC" in the same way. We believe PHEVs provide an alternative to using gasoline at $4, $5, $6 ... a gallon, by providing the choice of plugging-in at 60, 70, 80 cents worth of electricity for gasoline gallon equivalent (GGE). In brief, it's about our freedom of choice.

The estimated PHEV3A launch is currently set for Tuesday afternoon on the 22nd of April 2008, in commemoration of Earth Day. The launch site will be from the Capitol Mall after EVADC's participation as an exhibitor in the Environmental Protection Agency's 4th National Sustainable Design Expo and People, Prosperity and Planet (P3) Award Competitions. At that time, "The Spirit of DC" will be heading South through the Blue Ridge Mountains of Virginia, then East to Richmond, then straight towards the Capital of North Carolina visiting five EAA Chapters in and between Raleigh.

Potential sponsors, whether EAA Chapters or individual EAA Members, can

contact PHEV3A Co-Chairs -- JoEV Lado, the virtual PHEV3A Operations Center(POC) commander and “On the Road” PHEV3A contact, J. "EVJerry" Asher as follows:

Joe: JoeLado@yahoo.com

EVJerry: EVisionA2Z@usa.net (202) 486-5450 - Cell

EVADC expects that 100's of 1,000's of people in North America as well as foreign visitors will see "The Spirit of DC," while on its travels All Around America. We sincerely hope that this venture will be seen as the "pivotal point" when the nation finally realizes on a grass roots level that plug-in hybrids and electric vehicles are truly a practical possibility.

EVer Yours for the PHEV3A Committee of EVADC,

Joe Lado and J. "EVJerry" Asher, Co-Chairs
