Google.org Creates RechargeIt.org Initiative to Promote PHEVs

Google, the industry leading Internet search engine company, encourages its employees to give back to the international community by dedicating some of their paid employee time to Google’s charitable organizations under the umbrella of “Google.org” at:  www.google.org

One project launched by employees within Google.org’s “Climate Change and Energy” focus group hopes to enable and promote the use of Plug-In Hybrid Electric Vehicle (PHEV) technology. They project leaders have named this initiative “RechargeIt.org” at:

http://www.google.org/recharge

Google engineers are teaming with Felix Kramer’s CalCars Initiative (www.calcars.org) to promote the use of PHEV technology. The company will be immediately converting four Toyota Prius sedans and two Ford Escape Hybrid SUVs to PHEVs. Google also hopes to add another 100 Plug-In Hybrid Electric vehicles to its company automotive fleet. To outline the RechargeIt.org Initiative goals and directions, the project leaders of this newly formed coalition have produced a YouTube videotape at:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oDjSbWTJbdo

PHEVs and alternative fuel vehicles are gaining broad popular support every day from a strong cross-section of the American political spectrum. This includes the Sierra Club’s concerns over global warming on the progressive liberal left to Christian evangelical leaders’ concerns over U.S. dependence on imported foreign oil from an unstable MidEast region on the conservative right. Steelworkers, Teamsters and other Union leaders see a potential for high-paying jobs available to their members who participate in the development of new industries devoted to creating and harnessing alternative energies. This coalition is also gaining support from the Electric Utility companies as well as interested Venture Capital investment companies that see potential dollar returns resulting from “green” alternative energy investment efforts.

These grass roots efforts seem to be swelling despite a lack of support from the Federal government, the Energy industry and the Big Three U.S. automotive manufacturers. Many people inside this initiative effort describe the movement as being similar to the enthusiasm that launched the Internet. They hope their efforts will result in another economic boom for the U.S. economy when this new energy infrastructure becomes available to everyone within the U.S. and worldwide.

A123 Buys Hymotion PHEV Module Technology. Supports RechargeIt.org Initiative.

A123Systems Acquires Hymotion

Transaction combines Automotive Class Lithium Ion™ technology with vehicle-level power-engineering experience to address the needs of the growing aftermarket demand for plug-in hybrid modules

Watertown, Mass. – May 3, 2007 – A123Systems today announced that it has completed the acquisition of Hymotion, Inc., the leading fabricator of aftermarket plug-in hybrid modules. These Battery Range Extender Modules (BREMs) can be easily installed in the spare tire well of most hybrid vehicles, enabling current production models to become Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicles (PHEVs) capable of achieving 100 or more miles per gallon. Converted PHEVs have the potential to reduce oil consumption by as much as 75 percent and CO2 emissions by up to 50 percent over today’s internal combustion engine powered vehicles.

“With 5 million hybrids expected on the road by the end of 2010, we feel there is a significant opportunity for an interim aftermarket solution allowing consumers to experience the oil and CO2 reduction benefits that PHEV upgraded vehicles provide,” said David Vieau, President and CEO.

The Hymotion acquisition provides A123Systems access to critical early IP on Plug-in Hybrid systems technology as well as valuable experience with engineering BREMs using A123Systems’ Automotive Class Lithium Ion batteries. Terms were not disclosed.

“The fleet market has been an important testing ground for PHEVs” said Ricardo Bazzarella, Co-founder and President of Hymotion. “The Hymotion systems will continue to be available to the growing fleet market. Over the coming months we will work to reduce delivery times to fleets by standardizing packaging and in anticipation of having a consumer ready system for 2008 introduction.“

“BREM technology is the near-term answer for plug-in hybrid vehicle technology and, thanks to recent joint contracts with NYSERDA and the South Coast AQMD, no company had nearly as much real-world data on engineering aftermarket modules with A123Systems’ batteries as Hymotion,” said Akos Toth, Co-Founder and Director of Engineering of Hymotion. “Joining forces with A123Systems enables us to more efficiently address demand for plug-in hybrid electric vehicles today.”

The Hymotion team has a deep history in the alternative fuel and heavy duty vehicle segments, bringing critical integration and design experience to the group. This valuable experience includes work with OEMs such as Daimler-Chrysler and BMW, as well as heavy duty manufacturer Orion Bus Industries, and alternative fuels companies, Hydrogenics and Quantum Technologies.

The A123Systems Nanophosphate™ cells are next-generation lithium-ion batteries designed for exceptional power, safety and life. A123System’s Automotive Class Lithium Ion cells have been optimized specifically for use in HEV and PHEV applications.

LVEVA Demonstrates Electric Vehicles at Boulder City Damboree 4th of July Parade

Nearby Boulder City was founded as a “shanty town” for the builders of Boulder Dam (now named Hoover Dam) in the 1930’s. After the dam was built and Lake Meade was created to provide hydroelectric power to the Southwest region, many of the workers stayed on to form the Boulder City community. Each year, most of the town turns out during the 4th of July holiday to celebrate a “Damboree” to commemorate the “can-do” spirit of the city’s founders.

The LVEVA participated in the annual 4th of July parade once again this year. Boulder City residents of the LVEVA led by John Bullis, his wife Leti, and Pat Aschenbach’s family hosted other LVEVA members in preparing for the parade. Staging was at 8 AM at the Aschenbach family house, then line-up in time to join the parade at 9 AM. After the parade, lunch was served at John and Leti’s house to continue the festivities of the day.

Other LVEVA participants included Bob MacNamara, who drove his three-wheel Electrans electric motorcycle. Al Sawyer and Jan Himber rode in Al’s Toyota Prius gas/electric hybrid. Vice-President Bill Yule drove his electric Hyundai conversion car. Secretary/Treasurer Bill Kuehl and his wife Amanda drove their Toyota Prius hybrid.

Event hosts Pat Aschenbach and his family drove his electric GMC Pickup truck. Leti drove her GEM Neighborhood Electric Vehicle (NEV). John rode his favorite blue Sharper Image Electric bike . Former LVEVA Board of Director member Adam Howard followed on an electric scooter. The LVEVA also welcomed Danny, who rode an electric bike with 20-inch wheels. He is the new owner of a red Lectra Centauri that was originally designed and built in Las Vegas from the Lectra Motors Company in the early 1980’s.  It had been restored by another Boulder City resident and LVEVA member, Ken Carpenter. Danny’s E-bike is powered by a 24-volt system with a chain drive.

The festivities ended about 2 PM that day and “a good time was had by all”!
